Undergraduate Studies In Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences offers an undergraduate major and minor in Biological Sciences. The program provides course and laboratory opportunities in environmental sciences, molecular and microbial biology and physiology.

The Biological Science program at UWM provides a strong foundation in all areas of biology and the natural sciences. Courses can also be tailored to fit the unique interest and professional goals of the student. The Department provides the basic requirements for entrance into a variety of fast-growing careers related to biology, the professions of medicine, veterinary sciences and other health careers as well as preparation for graduate work in the discipline.

Three required core courses (150,152 and 260) will provide a broad introduction to biology and the major. Biology is also built on a strong preparation in the natural sciences so student are required to take introductory chemistry and organic chemistry lecture and lab courses, a year of physics lecture including a lab, and one semester of college math for a Bachelor of Arts or math through calculus for a Bachelor of Sciences.

Additional depth in your knowledge of biology will be met through advanced courses in the areas of plant biology, animal biology, molecular and microbial biology, and evolutionary and environmental biology. This distribution requirement of a 3 credit hour course in each of four general areas of biology can be meet by choosing courses from an extensive list of options. Your specific interests in biology can be further developed through advanced elective courses, senior seminar and independent study projects under the direction of our research faculty. A microbiology option in the biological sciences major is also available. In addition, students can choose the interdisciplinary major in Conservation and Environmental Science or seek in addition to the major, a Certificate in Biotechnology.
