POSITION TITLE: Open rank tenure track faculty positions (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) to join a team involved in interdisciplinary public health research. 

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is actively engaging new and existing faculty in developing its interdisciplinary public health programming and is planning for an accredited School of Public Health. In support of these initiatives, the University is conducting a cluster hire of qualified and talented health sciences faculty to conduct research with the Center for Urban Population Health. These faculty will develop and support educational and research initiatives in interdisciplinary disease prevention and health promotion of urban populations.

 

Educational experience will be sought to develop particularly the broad areas of: epidemiology, informatics, community and environmental health, and community health promotion. Research interests will align with the focus areas of the Center for Urban Population Health: maternal and child health, health promotion including nutrition and physical activity, risk reduction including violence, sexual risks, alcohol and smoking behaviors, and social and cultural determinants of health and health disparities.

 

We seek individuals with the education and experience to perform the following responsibilities:

 

·     Develop and maintain liaisons with other academic units and support community-based participatory research activities with primary responsibilities as a researcher with the Center for Urban Population Health;

·         Develop and maintain an active line of research in public and urban population health with a specific emphasis in reducing or eliminating disparities and in understanding the behavioral, social and cultural determinants in increasing positive health outcomes;

·         Lead and facilitate an interdisciplinary team of researchers who will seek and secure extramural funding aligned with the focus areas of urban population health;

·         Participate in planning activities related to the development of an accredited School of Public Health;

·         Instruct undergraduate and graduate students in UW-Milwaukee’s interdisciplinary coursework and programs (e.g. population health research, translational sciences, health disparities, health services research, etc.);

·         Engage MPH and PhD students and fellows in population health and translational sciences from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health;

·         Instruct students in the PhD in Public and Community Health to be offered collaboratively with the Medical College of Wisconsin;

·         Direct and advise graduate students in areas of expertise and undergraduate students in various public health schools and colleges including health sciences, nursing, and social welfare; and

·         Contribute to the development and implementation of course work relevant, but not limited to interdisciplinary public and population health, epidemiology, translational sciences, research methodology and statistics.

 

APPOINTMENT: There are two to three (2-3) positions. Each appointment will be for nine-months with potential for a 12-month appointment with extramural funding. 50% of each appointment will be as a collaborative scientist with the Center for Urban Population Health and 50% as an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor with customary faculty responsibilities. The academic home of the individuals recruited will be determined by their educational degree and experience and may be in the College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, Helen Bader School of Social Work, College of Letters and Science or other College/School, with opportunity for full or joint appointment when a School of Public Health is established within one to two years.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Minimal qualifications include:

·     Doctorate (PhD, MD, or equivalent) in a population health-related discipline with an emphasis in research methodology, biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, community-based participatory research and/or health informatics;

·         Active research and publication record;

·         Evidence of an extramurally-funded program of research;

·         Interest in conducting community-academic partnership research and programming;

·         Teaching experience in higher education;

·         Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary group of scientists; and

·         Demonstrated commitment to related scholarly/professional organizations.

 

SALARY:  Negotiable and competitive

 

STARTING DATE:  January 1, 2008 or negotiable
