General Information

Students interested in establishing credentials as specialists in the dynamic field of Asian Studies are invited to investigate the UWM Certificate Program. The Asian Studies Certificate allows students to combine the study of Asian languages, culture, politics, and history with their regular course of study. It is available to all UWM students, regardless of major, and is awarded upon graduation with a notation on the student's final transcript.

Supported by a growing faculty of Asian specialists in a wide-variety of disciplines, the certificate program offers courses and other opportunities designed to prepare students for any future endeavor relating to this developing and exciting area of the world. The program provides a convenient means for students to add an Asian focus to their studies in any UWM degree program. Graduates with an Asian Studies Certificate have gone on to jobs in business, sales, media, and teaching in Asia.

Students enrolling in the Certificate Program are required to earn a minimum of eighteen credits, at least nine of which must be completed at UWM, and achieve a grade point average of 2.7 or above in all courses counting toward the certificate. The following courses are required:

1. Geography 213 The Geography of Asia (3 credits)

2. 15 credits from specifically designated courses on Asia from the Departments of:

Language Study

Students are encouraged to study an Asian language and will receive a certificate indicating the language that they have studied when completing 12 or more credits beyond the 18 credit general certificate requirement. UWM offers courses in Chinese and Japanese that fulfill this requirement; for other Asian languages, transfer of credits or proficiency-based testing are possibilities. A grade point average of at least 2.5 is required in these language courses.
