River Hills Window
(Interior Design Showcase Window)
Johann Minten
Traditional stained glass
1996

This window was designed by Johann Minten for an interior designer participating a showcase for the American Society of Interior Designers. It displays a sample of the variety of colors and types of glass available to contemporary stained glass artists. The composition is playful and fluid, utilizing some antique mouth blown glass, evident by the striations. It also employs purple flashed glass demonstrating a color gradation ranging from dark to light. The machine rolled, or textured glass, integrated into the window, includes rippled, reeded and crackled glass, emphasizing and manipulating the play of light.

The lead work in this window serves design and aesthetic rather than strictly functional purposes. The flowing, plant like caming functions to separate color and is, itself, a piece of art. The lead gives the window an aesthetic appeal by incorporating different widths of came and utilizing washers. The colored areas are broad, allowing a significant amount of light to dance through the window.
