- As one of several companies vying for the stained glass commission at St. Mary's Church in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, artist Johann Minten created this presentation drawing in 1991. The church committee specifically requested the theme and asked that representations of nature be included.
- In the center of the piece, the Virgin Mary wears her traditional blue mantle and is seated on a heavenly throne with outstretched hands presenting the Christ Child. Both figures have a halo, or nimbus, behind their heads, implying their holiness. Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit, symbolized by the dove, descends upon them. Minten used small squares in the drawing, indicating how the glass was cut, except on the figures' faces, where the glass was painted for a more realistic and recognizable image. The background glows with the warm colors of red and yellow, suggesting the sacredness of the depicted scene. Because a stained glass window possesses a unique relationship with its environment, Minten felt that a realistic representation of leaves would contrast the church's modern appearance. Therefore, he decided to render the leaves as abstract ornamental forms throughout the work.
