Jean Hudson has been doing zooarchaeological analysis in Peru since 1994. In 2001 she began a new field project with modern reedboat fishermen in Peru, studying social and ecological aspects of this hand-crafted style of fishing. The image here shows two men taking off into the surf for a day of net fishing. Their watercraft are handmade from reeds that grow locally. The boats were termed caballitos, or little horses, by the Spanish; each fisherman rides his own through the waves to fish offshore.
