Thomas Malaby

Thomas Malaby has been conducting fieldwork in Greece, in the city of Chania (on the island of Crete) since 1994. His on-going research concerns the role of unpredictability in human experience, and in Chania he pursued this question by examining gambling and other forms of tolerated criminality and how they are connected to the social, economic, political, and personal risk-taking in Greeks' lives. This image shows Malaby with one of his research contacts (in plaid shirt) and some of his family at their patrilineal home outside Chania. His mother (in black) was over 75 years old, yet continued to oversee the sizable household and its agricultural holdings (olive and orange groves). The meal was produced entirely from their land.
