Ingrid Jordt has been conducting research in Burma since 1988. Her research concerns the impact of a Buddhist mass lay meditation movement on state making and the politics of state legitimization. She is also interested in women's experiences and roles in Burmese Buddhist institutions. This image is of two lay yogis (meditators) who lived permanently at the Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha center in Rangoon. The brown and white costume signifies that they keep ten precepts, one of which is not to eat after mid-day.
