Opening Workshop for New Science, Math, and Engineering Faculty

The Women and Science Program hosts an annual workshop for new science, mathematics, and enginnering faculty and academic staff members in the UW System. Enrollment in the workshop is limited to 50 participants, and preference is given to first-year educators

The workshop takes place during a Thursday and Friday afternoon early in the fall semester. The 2000 Workshop is scheduled for October 26-27 at the J.F. Frederick Center on the UW Madison campus. Seminar sessions will include:

Teaching Science Using Inquiry Labs and Concept Testing
Cooperative and Collaborative Learning in Science Classrooms
Climate and Gender Issues in the Classroom
Writing Grants for Teaching Improvement
Case Studies and Problem Based Learning
Authentic Assessment
Applying Student-Active Pedagogies to Specific Disciplines
(biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, and physics and engineering)

NSF Regional Informational Meeting:
Program for Gender Equity in SMET

On Nov. 2, Dr. Ruta Sevo (the Director for the NSF Gender Equity in SMET Program) will be in Oshkosh for a regional informational meeting at the Park Plaza Hotel. The agenda is included below, and there is no cost for the workshop. Lunch will be provided by the Women and Science Program. If you are interested in attending, contact Amy (melchior@uwosh.edu) with your name, address and e-mail address by Oct. 20. This meeting is open to all interested educators in the region (including nearby states.)

Distance education discussion sessions are a new event aimed at providing a greater number of opportunities for interaction between program participants. The first discussion, on the topic of Scientific Literacy, took place in February, 1999. Current and future events are planned to focus on career development for women and men in academia. These events are sponsored by the UW System Women and Science Program.
