Movie:  Zoot Suit                                                              download flyer
7pm - 9pm
Business Building S151
3202 N. Maryland Ave., Milwaukee

A kind of musical accompanying the story of the early 1940's and the effect that the "zoot suit" (a man's suit of long jacket and pegged pants, always worn with a long keychain that looped almost to the ankle.... the rebellious fashion of young men) had on the morals and attitudes of the people of that era. Part fact and part fiction, Zoot Suit is the film version of Luis Valdez's critically acclaimed play, based on the actual Sleepy Lagoon murder case and the zoot suit riots of 1940s Los Angeles . Henry Reyna (Daniel Valdez) is the leader of a group of Mexican-Americans being sent to San Quentin without substantial evidence for the death of a man at Sleepy Lagoon. As part of the defense committee, Alice Bloomfield (Tyne Daly) and George Shearer (Charles Aidman) fight the blatant miscarriage of justice for the freedom of Henry and his friends. Edward James Olmos stars as the mythical "El Pachuco" in a blend of action, music, and excitement.

Movie: The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez                              download flyer
3:30pm - 5:30pm
Walker's Point Center for the Arts
911 W. National Ave., Milwaukee

The retelling of an incident in Gonzales, Texas in 1901 revolving around a stolen horse, is taken identity and a killing. An unusual story of the all too usual exploitation of the powerless in Texas History. The entire cause of the problem evolves from the use of a deputy to translate. His command of Spanish is inadequate and he mistranslates what a witness tells the sheriff as to whether the real perpetrator of the crime is riding a mare (yegua) or a male horse (caballo). This error results in destroying a family and the death of an innocent man.

Movie: La Ciudad                                                              download flyer
7pm- 9pm
Bolton Hall 150
2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee

THE CITY (LA CIUDAD) tells stories of loss, love, frustration, and hope as four people recently arrived in a large city struggle to build their lives, their communities and their dreams. Filmmaker David Riker's sensitive portrayals urge us to take a closer look at today's immigrants, who are not so different from many of our ancestors when they first arrived from a foreign land.

The GI Forum, Youth Culture,
and Political Mobilization in the 1950s

with Marc Rodriguez
12pm - 1pm
UWM Union E240
2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee

5pm - reception
5:30pm - 6:30pm - talk
La Causa School Gym
1643 S. 2nd Street, Milwaukee

Professor Rodriguez' lecture examines the grass-roots politics in the 1950s of the GI Forum and Youth Culture among Mexican-Americans in Crystal City, Texas with an eye to understanding the nature of citizenship in the Cold War era, the nature of patriotism, and the differences within organizations such as the GI forum at the local as opposed to the national level. Rodriguez compares this adult activism with that of Mexican-American teenagers coming of age at the dawn of the Rock-and-Roll era and a mass consumer culture which they tied to their own understandings of Cold War American democracy and politics in a way that lay the foundation for the Chicano Movement of the 1960s.

Movie: Taking Back the Schools                                  download flyer
7p
m - 8pm
Bolton Hall 150
2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.

It covers the Los Angeles high school blow outs of 1968 thoroughly and with passion. You can witness young people their own age forcefully agitating for change. It is also striking because the catalysts for the walk outs—high drop out rate, crumbling schools, lack of Mexican American teachers—still resonate today. They actually go back and forth between a photo or video of a participant from the 1960s to that same person being interviewed today, and it is insightful to see how that individual changed in the intervening thirty years.
