What to expect at New Freshman Orientation

  • Advising at New Freshman Orientation is done in a group-advising format.
  • While you will not meet one-on-one with your advisor at New Freshman Orientation, you will have an opportunity to speak individually with an advisor as you complete the registration process.
  • Typically, there is about 1 advisor for every 10 AOC students attending.
  • Make the most of the time you have to speak with an advisor. Come prepared for your New Freshman Orientation program!

Sequence of Program

For AOC students, New Freshman Orientation lasts about 8 hours and consists of five components:

  1. AOC Information Session (for students, parents or guardians)

  2. Welcome and General Presentation

  3. Orientation Activities. Students participate in small group activities (e.g., ice breakers) with Campus Ambassadors while parents learn about campus resources.

  4. PAWS & Pre-Registration Instruction. Students attend presentations to learn how to use and understand the timetable and participate in the PAWS Interactive Tutorial. (Parents continue with their own program.)

  5. Advising & Registration Session. AOC students attend group advising session and register for classes on PAWS. (Parents continue with their own orientation). Advisors and current students will help you register for your classes in a computer lab after you have finished your course selection.
