Brevard Fault Zone

Location: The Brevard Fault Zone extends from Alabama to Virginia, we viewed this feature in North Carolina near Rosman along Hwy 178 near intersection with US 64.

Darlene Studying the rocks

Geological Setting: The Brevard is located within the Piedmont and represents a tectonic boundary

Geology: Near Rosman the Brevard is located within the Henderson gneiss.  The Henderson gneiss is an augen gneiss with the size and number of augens decreasing to the north within the zone proceeding to an ultramylonite.

Nick pointing out the augens

Picture of augen mylonite as we proceed further into the fault zone

Further into the zone we reach mylonites with augens still visible.

Another mylonite with the augens getting smaller

Proceeding to an ultramylonite with almost no visible augens remaning

The most fine grained ultramylonite we encountered with about one visible augen per square meter.

as the group listens and takes notes.

Finally Queen Tiffany explains what really is going on at this location.
