Eclogite and Retrogressed Eclogite

Along Honeycutt Branch, Bakersville, North Carolina

Eclogite

-  Found near the base of the Spruce Pine Thrust Sheet

 - Formed during subduction during the Taconic Orogeny and incorporated into the accretionary wedge that is now part of the Ashe Metamorphic Suite

-  Contains garnet, omphacite, rutile, pyroxene and quartz with garnet inclusions of clinozoisite, titanite, rutile and quartz (Hibbard et. al., 2001, Stewart et. al., 1997)

-  Both prograde and retrograde metamorphism found at this outcrop

-  Age estimate of peak eclogite facies metamorphism is approx. 460Ma with peak minimum pressures and temperatures of 13-16 kbar at 600-800 C  (Miller et. al., 2000)
