Clinch Mountain is part of the Thorn Hill Section in the Valley and Ridge province.  The scenic overlook from Clinch Mountain is southeast across the Valley and Ridge.  Cherokee Lake is in the valley, the lake was formed by the damming of the Holston River.  The mountains in the distance are from the Blue Ridge Thrust Sheets (Moshier, 1989).

Behind the Clinch Mountain Restaurant, large Crinoid calyx fossils are noticeably seen in the Juniata Formation.
