Current Research Projects Depression Treatment Projects Many effective psychotherapies for depression still do not help all who receive them, and they do not help all of those who are helped as much as possible. Our treatment research projects work with those clients who are not helped by existing psychotherapies for depression or who have not been adequately studied, including women, ethnic minorities, and individuals diagnosed with both depression and personality disorders. Treatment may take many forms, depending on the needs of the client, but we will almost always focus on interpersonal problems that get in the way of people having the kinds and quality of relationships that they would like to have. These projects take place in the Depression Treatment Specialty Clinic within the UWM Psychology Clinic. Clients are individuals diagnosed with depression. Additional inclusion and exclusion criteria apply. All clients have their depression and interpersonal functioning tracked weekly. All sessions are videotaped and the therapist and client behavior in session is rated in order to link in-session behaviors to daily life improvements. Clients pay $10 per session for 20 sessions of therapy. All clients receive an intensive initial assessment, an assessment at the end of treatment, and a follow-up assessment six months later for which they are paid $50. This payment is necessary as previous research has found it difficult to recruit clients for follow-up assessments which are important for the evaluation of relapse. Additionally clients complete weekly and daily measures over the course of therapy.
