My other interest is bicycle and pedestrian route planning.
This may have nothing to do with my science background, but it is imperative
to sustainable development. Being an avid bicyclist since my
childhood,
using GIS to support bicycle planning is a luxury. |

Employment Experience: |
- During my employment with the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin
(BFW) I have been exposed to various facets of bicycle/pedestrian
planning, analysis. I was directly responsible for maintaining and
managing all GIS data utilized in bicycle route spatial analysis, which
included creating a geodatabase of all bicycle facility, environmental,
parcel, and demographic data. Working with the BFW Program Manager, new
on-street and off-street facilities were digitally incorporated into a
GIS on an as needed basis.

- All the abovementioned data has been incorporated into a bicycle
route map for Milwaukee County and served as the foundation for the new
paper bike map for the City of Milwaukee. I have also modified and
created a new bicycle mail survey that includes acquiring data on the
status of existing bicycle facilities in the City of Milwaukee. I have
also contributed to the production of the state bike map using GIS
editing of all bike stores and off-road trailhead locations. In
addition, I have had the opportunity to utilize all necessary road and
traffic engineering data to calculate a Bicycle Level of Service (BLOS)
for all roads in the City of Milwaukee.

- A BLOS analysis was derived for all streets based on the
methodologies derived from Sprinkle Consulting Inc., and is the most
current and widely accepted BLOS algorithm. As a result, for the first
time in Milwaukee, each road can now be confidently assessed for
potential on-street bicycle route connections or new bike facilities.
The BLOS equation accounts for pavement quality, width of travel lanes,
painted parking space width, traffic speed, ADT, and truck volume.

- I have also developed an ArcIMS website that incorporated all the
abovementioned data and analysis for anyone interested in biking in
Milwaukee County.
An ArcIMS website (http://129.89.71.185/website/gar2/gar2bike/viewer.htm)
was created for BFW and anyone thinking of bicycling in Milwaukee
County. The website includes all planned and/or existing
on-street/off-street bike facilities, socioeconomic, demographic, and
environmental features of Milwaukee County. An informative pop-up page
connected to a database through .ASP, allows anyone interested in
bicycling in Milwaukee County to find out where the nearest bicycle
store, coffee shop, or restaurant is, and also see a photograph of the
actual biking conditions by simply clicking on a desired bike facility.
The results of this project has fulfilled a void in online mapping of
bicycle facilities and related desirable bicycling amenities in
Milwaukee County

- While employed with the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, I have been
involved with gathering and manipulating data for the City of Milwaukee
that is currently being used for the safe routes to schools program (SRTS)
program. During the fall of 2004, I was responsible for preparing
basemaps and data for 3 schools in Milwaukee for a SRTS pilot project
carried out by graduate GIS students at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The data preparation included digitizing
no-transport zones and geoprocessing of impedance data. The impedance
data that was used and spatially manipulated included; traffic controls,
crime, bike/ped crashes, sidewalks, driveways, and signs. In addition, I
oversaw and helped direct all activities conducted by the students
during this pilot study. I have also recently received the BikeEd Road 1
safety training certificate endorsed by the League of American
Bicyclists.
