Atwater Beach

Atwater Beach is the town beach for the village of Shorewood.

The beach is free to all except between Memorial Day and Labor Day, at which time there is a charge. You walk down a long set of stairs to get to this beach.

Along this stretch of the shoreline, the homes are quite close to the bluff, and here one can see great effort in keeping the bluff in place, or moving the shore outwards with fill. This beach is also "held" in place with groins. These pictures show the beach at low lake level. It is very unusual to be able to view the beach from the end of one of the groins. Most years they are at or below water level.

One can also see the attempts at protecting the base or toe of the bluff with structures. They may seem foolish when lake levels are low. However, water was at the base of the bluff only three years ago.

Look at this movie and picture to determine if removing the trees from a hillside affects the rate of erosion.

How would removing trees affect the rate of erosion in an area such as this?
